The Song

Experiment 2: Introduction

For my second experiment, I decided to write a song. Growing up, my passion for music was one thing that clearly separated me from my two older brothers. As you go further into my website you will see how my relationship with my siblings greatly shaped me. So, having a passion unique to me is and has been, something I cherish dearly. I have been playing the piano, violin, and guitar since a young age and got to experience the most beautiful music. But, I have never created music of my own. The hope of this experiment is to try and expand my musical experience while also writing about a topic that I am passionate about.

Experiment 2: Genre Research

Maggie Rogers is what’s known as a singer-songwriter to which Pharell lamented, “They are my favorite type of singers. They tell their own story.” Though I wish I was as talented as Maggie Rogers, unfortunately, I do not have the singing capabilities so instead, I will be researching songwriting, and looking at Maggie Rogers for final experiment inspiration.

The typical structure for a song is as follows: Verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus, outro. Variability is what makes a song unique, but as a first-time writer, I will most likely be using this structure. The verses are the space in which the writer has the most room to tell a story. Most often, the second verse builds on the first verse, continuing a story that was begun at the intro of the song. The chorus is usually repeated word-for-word and it is the culmination of all the ideas of the verses and the entire song. Changes in the chorus can be used to show the changes in thought throughout the narrative. The bridge usually happens only once in the song and separates the second chorus from the third chorus. Aside from the change in lyrics, the bridge most often has a change in music to notify that the song is coming to a close

Finally, the outro is the final element of the song where the listener is able to recognize that the song has ended and the overall message of the song should be apparent by the last few lines. This entire structure is known as ABABCB.

Experiment 2: The Sample

Pretty smile

Sit down a while

To tell me what I am

Not good enough

Not strong enough

Cause a woman’s not a man

I take it in

Under my skin

And think about it again

I am better than anyone says

And that will be my plan

Definitions and propositions

Are holding me all in

Just to get the satisfaction

Of looking like I win

But the day has come

Where a man is not one

To come and set me free

I am me

Oh I am me

And that is all I need

Verse, Verse, Chorus- F# A D7
